This week we are going to talk about maps with our week 11 newspaper and continue studying Alabama's geographic regions with our week 12 newspaper.  There will be no test on week 11, but the week 11 newspaper (select crossword questions and map activity) will be turned in for a daily grade.  Week 12 test will be on Wednesday, September 13th.  We will also begin an in-school project on Alabama counties that will count as a test grade.
The graded crossword and test will come home this week for week 1.  We will review the test together in class before it goes home, but here are some important things to review:
  • The following things are graded on the crossword: correct answer, correct spelling, and writing what article the answer was found in on a separate piece of paper.
  • Students will lose 15 points for not turning in their newspaper.  They will always have the option to use one my copies and so they can complete the assignment on lined paper, but the 15 point penalty will be assessed.  Please stress the importance of keeping up with their newspapers!!!
  • We are talking about, and will continue to talk about, how to determine what the question/clue is talking about and then using the text features (such as headings, pictures, maps, etc.) to determine where in the newspaper to look for answers.  This is a great thing to reinforce at home if your student is struggling.
Science
This week we will continue to explore how water and land interact.  We will build a model of a stream and study soil.  Videos, pictures, and questions from our lessons will be posted on Google Classroom for review at home, as needed.  There will also be videos and websites posted on Google Classroom for extra practice and/or enrichment.

Social Studies
We are learning about the upcoming solar eclipse this week during our social studies time.  We will be painting our eclipse t-shirts on Thursday, so please have your child bring a large t-shirt from home that day that can be used as a smock so paint doesn't end up on clothes we don't want it to!

Reminders
  • This year in social studies, we will be studying Alabama’s history.  We use the Studies Weekly newspapers as our main curriculum as we explore our great state.  Students will receive their own copy of the newspaper for each topic (every 1-1 ½ weeks), and will have daily and test grades associated with this paper.  Along with the hard copy, there is a digital platform available with additional resources such as videos, virtual field trips, and more.  We ask that each student bring in $8.90 to cover the cost of his/her newspaper by August 18th as we plan to begin the newspapers the following week.  Please send in exact change or a check made payable to STUDIES WEEKLY.  Thank you!
  • Fourth graders will learn how to play the recorder this year in music.  Recorder order forms need to be returned with your option selected by August 25th.  Options are as follows: you may choose to purchase one, purchase a cleaning kit for one you already have, or not purchase and use one you have at home.
  • Fourth Grade curriculum night is on August 22 at 5:00.  Adults only, please!  We will be meeting in Mrs. Kiker's classroom (not the library!).
  • Information sheet with technology information/login for all subjects will come home next week.  It will be in a sheet protector in their #importantfolder, and we would like for it to stay in the folder for use at school and at home.
