Columbia Chess Club (4th - 6th grade)

What: 2017-18 Columbia Elementary 4th-6th Grade Recreational Chess Club (Upper Grades)

Who: Students in grades 4-6, who would like to play the game of chess or who are not interested in the competitive team, but still want to play for fun.  No registration form is necessary.  Just look at the dates below and join us!

Meeting DatesMondays January 29, February 12, March 5, March 26, April 9, April 23, and May 7.

 Time: 7:10-7:35 am.  NO drop-offs in the front of the school. Please use the car line in back.

 Place: Library

 Rules1.       Students must be mannerly and show good sportsmanship at all times. A ticket will be pulled for the first infraction. A student who continues to misbehave will not be allowed to attend future meetings.

2.      Students must be dropped off in the carline at the back of the school beginning at 7:10 am. Dropping students off before 7:10 and leaving them unsupervised is dangerous and not allowed.

3.      Students are welcome to bring their own chess sets, but the school staff cannot be held responsible for damaged or missing parts.

4.      Parents are welcome to stay and help supervise. If you are planning to stay with your child, you will need to enter and sign in at the front office to get a visitor’s badge.

**Failure to follow these rules will result in no longer being able to participate.

What if my child doesn't know how to play chess?  The best way for your child to learn to play chess is to use their Madison City School's Chess Kids online account,  or join a school chess club. The website www.chesskid.com is free and allows access to tutorials, puzzles, and partner play.  See your child's teacher for the user id and password.

Tournament Information

Tournament play is NOT required for the Recreational Club, but some of these students may want to give tournament play a try.  Scroll down to the section about non-rated players  on the MCCL website (link below) if your child is interested.  The link to the Madison City Chess League website also has you current information about upcoming tournaments and Madison City Chess League meetings in case your child wants to get instruction and play with other students from across Madison City Schools.
